The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Episode 1 Review

The Mighty Ducks are back! Or are they? This is not the Mighty Ducks team of the 90’s movie trilogy. Going into this show and having seen the trailers, I kind of knew what to expect, but there is still a cloud of mystery as to why Gordon Bombay is no longer coaching the Mighty Ducks hockey team. The Mighty Ducks team are now the version of the Hawks from the original 1992 Mighty Ducks movie, but amplified to a new elite level, without the quack, quack, quacks.

Throughout the episode, we are introduced to 12 year old, Evan, who loves the sport of hockey, loves the Ducks and has played with them for what appears to be many seasons. Now he is entering into the 12-14 year old division of hockey, and even though he has talent, he’s not Duck worthy by the head coach and is ultimately cut from the team. This does not bode well with single mom, Alex (Lauren Graham).

Alex is also an underdog in the office and amongst the other Ducks’ parents. When she sees the Ducks’ coach tell her son that he should “don’t bother” playing hockey and doing anything else unless you are excellent at it, even at this young age. So, she like many other parents encourages her child to start his own team of underdogs. It sounds a lot like the recipe for District 5, the original team of misfits from the 1992 Ducks movie.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Episode 1 Review 2

This episode shows, that even when others count you out, as long as you have heart, it doesn’t matter your size, you too can make a difference. It’s okay to be socially awkward and uncoordinated, as long as you have people and friends to support you and have your back always.

Bombay runs a rundown ice rink, in which he has a ‘no hockey’ sign and policy. He also says one of his classic lines from the original film, “I hate hockey, and I don’t like kids,” but he also adds on to the phrase, saying “they don’t make a sign for that, believe me I’ve looked.” So we now have a middle-aged Bombay, who appears to no longer be a hotshot lawyer, and is not coaching hockey anymore. I’m sure we’ll find out later in the season for his love/hate relationship with hockey and how he ended up here.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Episode 1 Review 4

There are no signs of any of the original Ducks from the first three movies in this episode, however there’s supposed to be at least one episode this season where we catch up with some of our favorite Ducks from the movies. I’m expecting this show to be similar to the first movie, but will get better as we dive deeper into what has transpired since 1996.

All in all, I give this episode 4 Hockey Pucks out of 5.
